City of Warner Robins Awarded $1.5 Million for New Affordable Housing Construction

Warner Robins, GA - May 9, 2024 - The City of Warner Robins is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $1.5 million grant for the construction of new single-family units aimed at providing affordable housing options for low to moderate-income homebuyers. This grant, provided through the Community HOME Investment Program (CHIP), presents a significant opportunity to bolster our community's housing stock and enhance accessibility to quality housing for residents.

The grant, administered by the Department of Community Affairs (DCA), is part of a broader allocation of $13 million distributed to 19 communities across Georgia. This funding, sourced from the HOME Investment Partnerships Program under the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), underscores the commitment of federal and state agencies to address the critical need for affordable housing solutions.

Mayor Patrick expressed enthusiasm for the grant, stating, "This award marks a pivotal moment for our city as we strive to meet the housing needs of our residents. By investing in the construction of new affordable homes, we are not only providing shelter but also fostering community growth and economic stability."

The newly constructed single-family units will be tailored to meet the needs of low to moderate-income families and individuals, offering modern amenities and quality construction at affordable price points. Through a partnership with a local developer, the City of Warner Robins aims to ensure that these homes contribute to the long-term vibrancy and inclusivity of our neighborhoods.

This grant represents a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local entities to address the ongoing challenge of housing affordability. By leveraging resources and implementing innovative strategies, the City of Warner Robins remains committed to creating a more equitable and resilient community for all.

About Department of Community Affairs CHIP Program:
The purpose of the Community HOME Investment Program (CHIP) is to provide safe, decent, and affordable housing in Georgia. Funds are granted to city and county governments, public housing authorities, and nonprofits to rehabilitate owner-occupied homes and build and renovate affordable single-family homes for sale to eligible homebuyers. CHIP is funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) HOME Investment Partnership Program funds. Funding is prioritized for communities with solid housing redevelopment plans. The CHIP application is released in September and due in January. For rehabilitation grants, studies illustrating current housing conditions are required. For grants to provide homes to homebuyers, market analyses justifying the need for affordable single-family homes and ability to sell to income-eligible homebuyers are required.
